 Paper Towel Germination?

I've started some seeds - ground cherry, tomato, and bell pepper- in paper towels and am having some trouble. I put them in on the 29th of March and only a few have sprouted. Some of the paper towels started growing a pink mold so I had to restart

 Heating Pad or Seed Warming Mat?

I am thinking about getting something to help the germinations of some lavender seeds. Other posts have suggested to get a seed warming mat. They are relatively pricey though. Could I use a regular old heating pad from a box store instead?

 wet paper towel technique

My brother told me this technique he uses to start seeds, so I gave it a try and all germinated within 3 days! I sprayed a paper towel with water, placed the seeds on it, folded it over to cover them, put it in a plastic bag on the dining room
